Competitive Edge = Sprained Ankle
If you follow this blog, you know that I am getting married soon. 37 days from now, in fact. So, I have continued with my healthy eating plans, keeping track of everything I put in my mouth, working out with Positively Fit training 3 days a week, plus cardio before or after my appointment, and Run Club, Yoga, Pilates, and most recently I have taken up tennis. I am a competitive type, so even though I am definitely not a tennis pro, I really run around the court. I even run lines every time I screw up.
Last Saturday my Fiancee and I went out to the courts and played tennis for about 45 mintues, when the couple playing next to us came over and asked if we wanted to switch partners for a while, so the guys (who were much better players) could hit at their level, and the girls could play eachother at our lower level. We said yes, and switched. So, the guys are grunting and hitting really hard serves, and this gal and I just hit the ball around, not a big deal. But since I am a new player, an athlete, and a competitive person, I of course had to get all crazy trying to return every ball. And, of course, she hit one that was a bit behind me, and I tried to get to it, and twisted around in a very unnatural way, and took a big, huge digger. I ended up facing completely backwards from where I was standing, on the ground with my legs all twisted up. I heard the POP of my left ankle as I went down. And, I broke my fall with my left wrist. I quit playing then, elevated my foot and rested up. We had plans to go to Costco for some groceries afterwards, and we went…and I limped around the store, just like the old days right after I had foot surgery on my right foot (the thing that led me to Positively Fit in the first place!).
And, on top of that, my Bachelorette Party was planned that night in Huntington Beach. So, I wrapped the old ankle in an Ace Bandage, threw on some cute flat sandals and went out. We walked up and down on a Pub Crawl, me in jeans, a cute white top, zebra striped flats, a veil, a hot pink sash, a necklace with a shot glass on it, a ring with a shot glass on it, and of course a tiara. Obviously I had quite a few drinks. And, I rode a mechanical bull, with my sprained ankle. I started to get a little worried that it was not just sprained, but actually fractured or broken. But, thankfully the booze kicked in and I didn't care about anything besides getting a Cactus Cooler Shot.
Sunday I felt OK, thanks in part to my friends insisting I eat Del Taco at 3am. Went and had breakfast with my girlfriend, and then took my 4 year old neice to the beach. We had a lot of walking from the car, across the sand, and of course she wanted to play in the waves all day, and I had to keep her from getting knocked down, so my ankle got a lot of action. Probably not the best idea, but we had a good time. Got back to her parents house and had dinner there with them and other friends, so I wrapped my foot in the Ace Bandage again. When I took it off, it looked like I had a tumor the size of a baseball on the outside of my ankle. Uh-Oh.
I made an appointment with the Doctor first thing on Monday morning, and sure enough, the ankle and wrist are sprained. But, thankfully, nor broken or fractured. My Doctor told me that if it were broken or fractured I would not be able to put any weight on it whatsoever. And, that if it didn't start feeling a lot better by the end of the week, to get X-Rays taken, but he thought I'd be fine. Just ice and elevate when I can, and wrap it in an Ace Bandage when I am out and about. He told me I can continue going to the gym, just to be careful and anything that hurts, stop.
So, my new thing is this: Nothing dangerous till after the wedding. No more tennis, either. I can't take any chances. With all the hard work I have done with my trainer getting me into tip-top shape, I don't need to take any steps backward by injuring myself. And, this goes for everyone, no matter if there is a wedding on the horizon or not. Be careful when you work out. If you are taking up a new sport, be especially aware of what you are doing. At the gym, if it hurts, stop doing it!
Be eXcellent! Ms. X
