About Tustin, CA
The City of Tustin was first established in 1868, when carriage maker Columbus Tustin and a partner purchased 1300 acres of land in the old Spanish land grant partition. Called “The City of Trees” by some, “Tustin City” was first populated by wild mustard and giant white-barked Sycamore Trees. Tustin immediately set out to make his town successful, establishing a post office and school district, even going so far as to give away plots of land in an attempt to lure families to the area. Tustin’s growth suffered a setback in 1877 when Columbus Tustin bid and lost on the Southern terminus of the Pacific-Southern Railroad. The deal went to nearby Santa Ana, virtually guaranteeing that city’s success. Tustin’s growth improved somewhat during the land boom of the 1880s and continued to grow steadily over the years to come. In the 1950s, the city of Tustin’s population expanded exponentially, as more and more people moved into the area, encouraged by post-war industries, good schools and a growing freeway system. Today, Tustin is home to nearly 70,000 residents.
